Aleida Martínez - Contemporary Artist 

Graphic designer and photographer, these two disciplines gradually led me to familiarize myself with the field of plastic arts.

My artistic career started about eight years ago and has always been linked to photography, a technique to which were gradually added other techniques such as sewing, drawing and watercolor, until that I put it aside in my most recent works, where work with fiber predominates; fabric sculptures and embroidered images.

My plastic work is based on reflection on identity vs. otherness. A look from the point of view of "the other". The "other" that I was taught to be, as a woman, half-breed, Latin American and of indigenous descent. It is because of this conceptual interest at the basis of my work that I have tried during my life to continue to move in order to meet new gazes, new cultures, new relationships between "I" and "others". Two years in Valencia, Spain; six months in Leticia, a small town in the Colombian Amazon; and my current stay in Paris, as well as short stays in different cities of Colombia and Europe, opened the door to new paradigms of human relations which enriched me both personally and artistically.
